Semen Gresik manufacture cement which supplies a significant portion of the Indonesian market. Cement manufacture is resource intensive, requiring substantial quantities of quarried limestone, clay and fuel to produce.
Sindicatum’s Semen Gresik project replaces part of the coal used in cement manufacture with biomass. The biomass arises locally as a by product of local agriculture and consists primarily of rice husks that were previously disposed as waste. The project will be carried out in the three existing kilns of Semen Gresik plant in Tuban, Indonesia. Substituting up to 15% coal with biomass in these kilns saves two tonnes of carbon dioxide for every tonne of coal replaced so reducing the greenhouse gas impact of the construction that results from Indonesia’s rapid growth.
The project was registered with the UNFCCC in February 2011, and will generate 5.2 million CERs over its life. Sindicatum has an advisory role on this project. Sindicatum is using its climate change expertise to develop the CDM documentation and to manage the registration and on-going CER verification processes.
