Bangkok Kamphaeg Saen Landfill Gas to Energy: Thailand
These Landfill Gas-to-Energy projects are landmark projects in South East Asia, developed as Thailand’s first commercial application of the collection of biogas from municipal waste to generate power. The projects reduce emissions of methane a potent greenhouse gas which is normally released from municipal waste in landfills, and displace fossil fuel (coal and diesel) generated electricity in the Thai Grid.
The projects employ Sindicatum’s own biogas collection technology to generate 8MW each of power using GE Jenbacher engines, with any remaining biogas destroyed through enclosed flares. Other than GHG reductions, the project brings a number of other benefits including:
- Technology transfer and development of skills in the local area
- High quality employment and development of skilled local staff
- Local economic development through the construction of a 15km grid extension to the area
- Reduction in the impact of the landfill in the local surroundings
- Improvement in local air quality including the reduction of odour from the landfill
Sindicatum Sustainable Resources has offsets available from a number of Gold Standard methane abatement and utilization projects in Asia.
